Diagnostics and condition assessment of power system equipment:

This research group focuses on the status detection and evaluation of equipment in power engineering, such as transformers or generators. As part of the energy supply system, these operating resources are subject to specific loads and resulting stresses, as a result of which they age or defects arise.

Diagnostic measurements make it possible to assess the condition of the equipment, i.e. to estimate the degree of aging and to identify possible causes of errors at an early stage.

Rooms

The high-voltage laboratory is located in room E0104 in the basement of the E-building (room finder). Various generator systems can create AC, DC and impulse voltages of 100 kV and above in restricted areas and thus allow a large number of different measurements.

Equipment

The following diagnostic measurements are possible, among others:

  • Partial discharge measurement
  • Frequency response analysis
  • Dielectric frequency response analysis

Controllable loads in the distribution network

High efficiency and optimized utilization of existing structures are essential goals of the intelligent power grid of tomorrow. A promising approach is based on moving the power consumption of time-flexible consumers in the distribution network, so-called controllable loads, to the times of energy surplus. This is to avoid bottlenecks and reduce power peaks. Various self-learning algorithms are being designed and their effectiveness is being investigated to enable the controllable loads to be used in a network-friendly manner.

Rooms

Computer workstations are located in rooms R4.082 and R2.081 of the R-building (room finder).
