Identifying key attacks on an IEEE 9-Bus System by leveraging the MITRE ATT&CK ICS Matrix
New Study on Cybersecurity in Digital Power Grids
With the ongoing digitization of power grids, cybersecurity becomes increasingly crucial. Our recent study uses the IEEE 9-Bus system to explore the transition from an electrical grid model to a cybersecurity model, identifying relevant standards and protocols for monitoring and control.
We further map known attack techniques from literature and publicly available vulnerability data (CVE) to the MITRE ATT&CK ICS matrix. Our analysis reveals that Denial of Service, unauthorized command messages, and Man-in-the-Middle attacks are among the most frequently discussed threats. Notably, academic research and real-world vulnerabilities show differences in focus on certain attack techniques. These insights support a more focused research approach and help address future security gaps in power grid systems.
