Cluster-Fault Control Strategies for Modular Multilevel Converters

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are essential for high-voltage applications due to their scalability and flexibility, but they involve many components that can fail. This article introduces four fault-tolerant strategies for MMCs dealing with rare cluster faults. It discusses three fault modes and proposes four strategies, validated through simulations and measurements. The results demonstrate that MMCs maintain functionality under voltage constraints with these strategies. The approaches are easy to implement, enhancing fault tolerance and allowing seamless integration into current systems.
